Masuda String Puppets - Evening Performance

Presented by: Masuda String Puppeteers Association

Sat 18th Nov 2017

Price: £9.00

Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes

Ages: 12+

A wonderful opportunity to experience the beautiful and intricate work of traditional Japanese marionette puppetry. Incredibly detailed puppets with up to 18 strings are controlled by highly skilled puppeteers who must train for at least 5 years before they are able to perform.

The Masuda String Puppeteers from Shimane Prefecture, Japan are believed to be the only group still performing in the classic Edo Period Style. They will present several short segments to provide a substantial demonstration of the possibilities of their craft.

The planned programme is:

Kotobuki Sanbaso - An opening performance to bring a good luck to the event.  This celebratory performance has been played at the start of Japanese performing arts such as Kabuki and puppetry for 300 years.

Keisei Awa-no-Naruto - The famous and sad mother-daughter reunion story, first performed in Kyoto in 1695.

INTERVAL

Demonstration of performing traditions - Including a puppet playing an instrument and delicately climbing a slippery ladder (an extract from another famous Japanese Folk Tale).

Yamamoto Ichiryu Shishi-no-Ikkyoku - This lion dance was created by Sankichi Yamamoto, a Tokyo puppeteer who taught puppetry in 1887 and set up the Masuda String Puppeteer group in Shimane.
